Meet the John Simons Ivy League Popover Shirt!

Fans of the John Simons look will by now undoubtedly be familiar with our Ivy League Button down shirts, which incorporate many of John’s favourite Ivy League details from the 1950s/1960s.

This iteration of the shirt comes in the form of an iconic Oxford cloth popover!

The popover has an undoubted pedigree within Ivy League style; the direct descendent of the longer placket pullover, which was in fact Brooks Brothers first form of button down all the way back in 1896. The shorter placket popover was a staple of the Ivy League Look throughout the 1950s and 60s both in short sleeve iterations, often in light fabrics such as end to end cotton, or madras, or in longer sleeve variants, with solid colours in oxford cotton. Whilst placket lengths did vary, the archetypal model featured a short 3 button placket, which is exactly what we have utilised here at John Simons.

In addition to the popover styling, of notable importance to many aficionados of the Ivy League look, is the generous collar roll. When fully fastened, the long collar points cascade beautifully, recalling what John describes as “The Ivy League Spearpoint collar”, a feature which would often be found on shirting from the “Jivy Ivy” period in the latter half of the 1960s. When worn open the collar rolls beautifully, a feat which has been achieved by omitting any lining from the collar and placket.

Furthermore, we have chosen to re-introduce a key detail from the John Simons archive, namely the button through flap pocket, making this shirt a genuine smorgasbord of Ivy League detailing.

A HOLLYWOOD FAVOURITE. WORN BY LEGENDS.

The story of The Original Playboy shoes began in 1936 when English shoemaker Hutton in Northampton created a completely new shoe with a unique and patented crepe sole construction. The ‘Play-Boy’, as it was originally called. The construction was based on a thick 100% natural crepe sole attached to the upper, a signature piping sewn all around the shoe and an inch-high crepe foxing to complete the shoe.

An iconic, and timeless, classic that has since been worn by royalties, legendary Hollywood actors, jazz musicians, rockabillies, hip-hoppers and a host of other good people around the world.
