Tyner Handwoven Madras Shirt

Inspired by the relaxed sophistication of 1960s jazz, The Tyner shirt is based on an original 60s boom years Ivy shirt, regular fit through the body with a slightly smaller sports collar. It represents the meeting point of authentic cloth and timeless menswear. 

The Tyner madras button down is a collaboration with The Original Madras Trading Company. Founded in the mid 20th century, OMTC were instrumental in bringing genuine handloomed Madras cloth to Western menswear, working directly with Indian weavers and insisting throughout on traditional methods of production. For Ivy enthusiasts of a certain vintage, the OMTC label became a quiet mark of credibility, cloth you could trust to age beautifully, to wear in rather than out. The fabric itself is handloomed on narrow looms in the region surrounding Chennai, the Southern Indian city that gives Madras its name. Each length of cloth is woven from start to finish by a single weaver using a traditional manual handloom, a process that takes approximately two to three hours to produce just one metre of fabric, around thirty times slower than modern machine weaving. Several yarns are worked together to create the cloth's characteristic plaid, with the slight irregularities and subtle texture that only true hand weaving can produce, reflecting the skill and individuality of the weaver. It is a fabric that improves with wear, softening gradually with each wash, settling into something increasingly personal to whoever owns it, much like a pair of raw selvedge denim jeans.

Produced with all of the hallmark Ivy League details, the cut takes its inspiration from Tyner's own style: easy in proportion and designed to be lived in rather than preserved. A shirt for every season, and for years to come.
